Spring Flowers of Lukang --Teacher Li-mei Shih said: “spring flowers are a regular appearance on weddings and festival occasions in this old town. The elder people also carry spring flowers around. They are a reminder of our history and cultural heritage; unfortunately, this ancient art is dying a slow death due to modernization. I remain fascinated with the craftsmanship of spring flowers and it happened that an artisan was willing to teach me, without asking anything in return. An idea occurred to me when I was trying to keep this tradition alive. I decided to maintain the old techniques but give the design a look new, with the shape of a phoenix, flower bouquets, butterflies and hair sticks. It is creativity, by keeping the old flavor but giving a new lease of life. This approach has made spring flowers a part of the contemporary life. The selection of flower looks and colors and the use of pins and other instruments have made spring flowers part of the fashion world and acceptable to the public. I hope to continue this creative work to make spring flowers blossom to their full beauty.”
